A selection of some of the country's top live music venues.
Cork Opera House is a venue in the centre of the city that has been on its site for over 160 years. With a seated capacity of 900 or 1,300 standing, the venue has, in recent years, reimagined itself. During festivals like Guinness Jazz, you can see acts play in unexpected locations, including the green room, bars, side-stage, and even the foyer. This creates venues within the venue, making the Opera House more accessible to up-and-coming acts.
So who can we expect to see there this year? “We are particularly looking forward to the Sounds From A Safe Harbour festival,” enthuses communications manager Siobhán Howe. “Gavin James returns for an intimate concert. We’re also working hard to bring opera home to Cork, by welcoming the Irish National Opera in April with Madame Butterfly.” And on being shortlisted for IMRO Live Music Venue Of The Year, Howe says: “Cork is a city with a thriving arts and culture scene, and Cork Opera House is delighted to be at the heart of that great community. Knowing that the people who come to our venue feel the same gives us the motivation to keep doing what we’re doing. It’s means so much to us that our venue continues to be chosen by acts and audiences.”
