Last night the first trailer for the upcoming biographical thriller Marshall dropped, giving us our first taste of the cinematization of the life of Thurgood Marshall, the United States' first African American Supreme Court Justice.
The film, directed by Reginald Hudlin, follows a young Marshall (Chadwick Boseman) as he takes on the Groveland Case. In a push to ensure the right to a free trial for people of all races, Marshall defends a black man (Sterling K. Brown) accused of attacking a wealthy white woman (Kate Hudson) in her own home.
The hard-fought case was one that particularly highlighted issues of racial discrimination in the justice system. It ended up being a career-shaping one as well for Marshall, who went on to win Brown vs. the Board of Education, the case that determined that racial segregation in public schools was unconstitutional.
Although the film is set in the mid 1900s, it is still disappointingly relevant, as the battle for racial justice continues. In fact, it wasn't until just last April that Marshall's client and the three other black men involved in the Groveland Case were finally exonerated by the Florida House of Representatives.
Considering the film's loaded cast (which also includes Dan Stevens, Josh Gad, and Sophia Bush), its impressive-looking production, and the grit, wit, and inspirational spirit of the trailer, I think we can expect a great deal from Marshall.

"In a time when we need heroes who fight for justice, Marshall is an inspirational movie that brings people together," Hudlin said of his project. "And it’s a lot more fun than anyone expects.”
