Matt Damon stars in a Chinese action fantasy film.
It might seem a bit odd that a white guy, Matt Damon, would head a Chinese film, but director Zhang Yimou has clarified that this is not meant to be a white savior narrative, but a tentpole feature meant to appeal to everyone. Yimou has directed critically acclaimed movies in the past, including the Jet Li feature Hero, so he seems trustworthy enough.
The trailer features impressive visuals, including beautiful, elaborate armor for the medieval Chinese warriors. It looks like a Chinese equivalent to the Hollywood-esque action blockbuster many of us have grown accustomed to. This will be the most expensive film made entirely in China to date, with a budget of US $135 million.
