Four years after the Academy Award and Palme D'or nominated Mr Turner, British writer-director Mike Leigh returns with historical drama Peterloo.
Set in 1819, the film revolves around the factors that led to the Peterloo Massacre. This was when the dispersal by cavalry of a radical meeting held on St. Peter’s Fields in Manchester led to an estimated 500 injuries and 11 deaths.
The rally was the culmination of a series of political protests held to demand Parliamentary reform and an extension of voting rights. The massacre - likened to Waterloo - is held as an example of Britain's fear of a similar violent revolution to the one which had occurred in France 30 years prior to Peterloo.
Skyfall and Penny Dreadful actor Rory Kinnear will star as Henry Hunt, radical and leader of the rally on the day in question. Meanwhile, Alastair Mackenzie, David Bamber, Maxine Peake and Tim McInnerny will also appear in the film.
