It seems the subversive filmmaker is a big fan of Irish-born painter Francis Bacon.
With the recent TV reboot of Twin Peaks puzzling and amazing in equal measure, David Lynch's name is on everyone's lips once more.
It was inevitable that people would start making retrospectives of his work again. Case in point- a new video essay by VoorDeFilm (via No Film School) looks at how many of the directors most iconic images were, in fact, references to paintings that art-lover Lynch would have seen throughout the years.
One of the most prominent influences is without a doubt the Irish-born painter Francis Bacon. Anyone who is at all familiar with Bacon's work shouldn't be that surprised, however. The Brutal, often grotesque surrealism the painter champions is a perfect match for Lynch's own brand of uneasy , dreamlike sequences.

The video argues Bacon inspired the likes of The Elephant Man and Twin Peaks . Other Artists referenced are American realist Edward Hopper and Belgian René Magritte.
