Aimee Mann
The recent successes of the soundtrack to the movie Magnolia and her own solo album Bachelor No 2 have rightly restored Aimee Mann to the limelight following a fallow period. Having suffered the indignity of her record company refusing to release Bachelor No 2, Mann eventually issued the album through her official web-site. Following huge critical acclaim it has sold well. Blessed with the voice of an angel and an unerrring abilty to spin melancholia into hummable hooks this is one not to be missed.
Aimee Mann plays The Warwick on 18th July.
The Blind Boys of Alabama
Anyone who witnessed their Dublin shows last summer will testify that the Blind Boys of Alabama are one of the most electrifying touring acts in the world today. They ve toured with everyone from Al Green to Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers and they never fail to set audiences alights. A spiritual experience in every sense of the word and not to be missed.
The Blind Boys of Alabama play the Augustinian Church on Thursday July 20th.
Beth Orton
Three albums into her solo career, Orton is now established as one of British music s leading lights. Her most recent album Central Reservation topped many critics list of best album of 1999. A hypnotic, mesmerising performer this is a rare chance to see her in a solo setting
Beth Orton plays the Black Box on Friday 28th July.
Richard Thompson
Needing little introduction to Irish audiences, Richard Thompson is widely acknowledged as the single most influential British songwriter/guitarist working today. His career stretches back over thirty years to his days with classic UK folk/rock collective Fairport Convention. His most recent album Mock Tudor was rightly hailed as a classic and one of his best. Thompson is an exhilarating live performer. Expect to hear his much covered song Galway To Graceland when he visits the City of The Tribes.
Richard Thompson plays the Black Box on Saturday 29th July.
Shane MacGowan
Described (by his own official webesite no less) as that man of many words and few teeth , Shane MacGowan has been releasing music in some shape or other for over 20 years now. From the early punk days of The Nipple Erectors through his wild days with The Pogues up to his current band The Popes MacGowan is now recognised as a singularly gifted songwriter and interpreter of the much maligned ballad tradition. With an impressive body of work to call on, his live shows are never less than celebratory affairs.
Shane MacGowan plays The Black Box on July 30th.
Ron Sexsmith
A regular visitor to these shores, Sexsmith made his Irish debut with a memorable show at the Roisin Dubh during the 1996 festival. Now with three critically acclaimed albums under his belt, Sexsmith has gained a well deserved reputation as a sensitive lyricist and accomplished songwriter.
Ron Sexsmith plays the Roisin Dubh on Tuesday 18th and Wednesday 19th July.
The Walls
With a new album (Hi-Lo) just released Steve and Joe are back, with a funkier, fresher sound, but also with their knack for writing great melodies and tunes intact. Live they are a formidable unit: tight, together and grooving.
The Walls play The Warwick on Thursday 27th July.
