The Olivier award winning Irish actor marks his return to the London stage by playing all nine roles in the famous Anton Chekhov play, being reimagined in 2023 by playwright Simon Stephens.
Irish Actor Andrew Scott is set to play every role in the new production of Vanya on the West End this Autumn. The famous play, written in 1898 by Russian playwright Anton Chekhov, marks a return to the stage for the Olivier award-winning Irishman.
As reported by The Guardian, Scott will play all four lead roles in Chekhov’s classic: Vanya, the protagonist, and manager of the estate; Professor Serebryakov, the husband of his late sister, and owner of the estate; Yelena, Serebryakov’s new young wife, and Sonya, Serebryakov’s daughter from his first marriage, with whom Vanya runs the estate.
Scott will also take on the roles of Vanya’s widowed mother Maria, a tenant Telegin, Astrov, a doctor and romantic rival of Vanya, and old nurse Marina. It marks Scott’s return to the London stage for some years.
Andrew Scott has seen success for his performances in theatre, with a nomination for a Laurence Olivier award in 2018 for his performance in Hamlet, and winning one for his role in Present Laughter.

Scott’s name is most renowned for his appearances on Television, with starring roles in Fleabag and Sherlock, as well as an appearance in Netflix’s Black Mirror. Scott has also appeared in movies such as war thriller 1917, and Spectre, Daniel Craig’s fourth Bond film, where Scott appeared as a nemesis of the infamous British spy.
The play Scott is set to star in this Autumn, first called Uncle Vanya, is being reimagined by Tony and Olivier award-winning playwright Simon Stephens, who previously worked with him on plays Seawall in 2008 and Birdland in 2014. The play will be directed by Sam Yates.
Vanya plays first at Richmond theatre in London from 28 August to 2 September, then at Duke of York’s theatre, London, from 15 September to 21 October.
