Ryan Gosling said he is “disappointed” that Barbie director Greta Gerwig and star Margot Robbie were left out of major Oscar nominations.
Actor Ryan Gosling said he was honored to be nominated for best supporting actor for his role as Ken in the summer biopic Barbie. “But there is not Ken without Barbie,” Gosling added, “and there is no Barbie movie without Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie.”
Despite a collective expectation that Gerwig and Robbie would receive nominations for best director and best actress respectively, the two were recognized elsewhere, with Robbie nominated as a producer in the best picture category and Gerwig announced alongside her husband for best adapted screenplay.
Gosling made a statement to CBS after the announcements, praising Gerwig and Robbie for their work by saying, "Against all odds with nothing but a couple of soulless, scantily clad, and thankfully crotchless dolls, they made us laugh, they broke our hearts, they pushed the culture and they made history. Their work should be recognized along with the other very deserving nominees… To say that I'm disappointed that they are not nominated in their respective categories would be an understatement.”

America Ferrara, who portrayed Barbie’s Gloria, also received a nomination for best supporting actress and mirrored Gosling’s disappointment over Gerwig and Robbie’s snubs.
Many Barbie fans brought their frustrations to social media, pointing out the irony of the Academy’s choices to recognize Gosling over Gerwig and Robbie given the film’s feminist message.
