Speaking at Dublin's Bridgerton premiere Coughlan said: "There’s so many eyes on me right now and what I can do is hopefully raise money for people in need".
Among the glam and the glitz of Netflix's blockbuster Bridgerton season 3 part two premiere last night, one subject was on everyone lips.
Taking place at the Lighthouse cinema in Smithfiled yesterday evening, the highly anticipated premier drew in swarms of fans.
Nicola Coughlan, who plays the protagonist of season 3, Penelope Featherington, has raised over €1.7 million for various Palestinian causes through a series Instagram fundraisers, was pictured wearing an artists for Ceasefire badge on the red carpet.
"I think it’s important to highlight Gaza for me for multiple reasons", the Galway actor said.
"Obviously because I am Irish and we have such a connection with Palestine and always have.

"I can remember Palestinian flags waving down Shop Street when I was in University. There’s such a connection there."
She added that Irish people had a unique role in influencing US policy on the matter saying: "I also think in terms of US politicians, [who] helped broker the peace process here.

"I think a lot of Irish people look to Joe Biden and go ‘You’re very proud of your Irish roots, so it would be great if you could use that and apply it to the same situation and help people that are in need'”.
Coughlan did acknowledge however, that as an actor, her role might be a different one: "There’s so many eyes on me right now and people go 'Who cares what an actor thinks?' and I say ‘You know what? You’re right’ but what I can do is hopefully raise money for people in need.”
When asked whether or not the star has faced backlash for her support of Palestine she said: “In a way, even if I have, I don't think it really matters because I am not the one suffering in this situation”.
The Galway actor continued saying: "It’s such a weird dichotomy, to think I am a part of this show and it’s so joyful and fun, but I am hyper aware of what’s going on in Gaza right now.
“If I get a few [negative] Instagram comments, I’ll live. I’m not the important one here".

The Bridgerton star added that she was delighted to be home, saying "It’s been so great".
Although, she admitted that some elements where less exciting than others, with the prospect of her family seeing some of the more risqué scenes in the show as "not great".
"You know what we are going to do? I’ll let them watch it, I won’t be there and then afterwards we will just pretend it never happened. Nice bit of denial!”
"A bit of Irish denial when I am back home!" she joked.
Referring to her co-star and on screen love interest, Luke Newton, who plays Colin Bridgerton, she said: "Poor Luke, he was like ‘your accent is getting thicker and thicker and thicker!"

Newton however seemed quite pleased to be in his cast mate's home country: "We are going to Galway tomorrow and we’ve got a day planned which is like Nic showing me around. I have no idea what to expect- I’m hoping there’s Guinness involved because it’s my favourite."
Adding, "I’ve actually seen there’s a tap over there so I am hoping to get a quick one before we see the screening!"
