The 77th edition of the prestigious film festival kicks off next month
The line-up for the 2024 edition of the Cannes Film Festival, running from May 14 to 25, was unveiled this morning – with features films from Irish director Lorcan Finnegan and Dublin-based production company Element Pictures among the highlights.
Element Pictures are gearing up for a particularly big year at the festival, after an unprecedented three films were included in the Official Selection.
Their selected films include their latest collaboration with Poor Things director Yorgos Lanthimos, Kinds of Kindness; September Says, which was filmed in Ireland; and On Becoming a Guinea Fowl, which was filmed in Zambia and post-produced in Ireland.
Previous films from Element that have won prizes at Cannes include Lanthimos’ films The Killing of a Sacred Deer, which won Best Screenplay in 2016, and The Lobster, which won the Jury Prize in 2015. The Wind that Shakes the Barley, which Element co-produced, won the Palme D’Or in 2006.
In response to the news, Ed Guiney and Andrew Lowe, co-CEOs of Element Pictures, have said they're "absolutely thrilled and honoured".

"This is a significant achievement for the Element team and for the exceptionally talented directors, writers, actors and crews that we work with," they continued. "These films are all incredibly special and we can’t wait for the world to see them. We are as ever very grateful to the Element team who have worked tirelessly on all three films to ensure they were finished in time for the festival.”

Lorcan Finnegan's The Surfer, meanwhile, is set to have its world premiere at the film festival. Starring Nicolas Cage, the film wrapped shooting in Australia in December. As reported by Deadline, it follows "a man who returns to Australia to buy back his family home after many years in the U.S., but is humiliated in front of his teenage son by a group of local surfers who claim ownership over the secluded beach of his childhood."
"Wounded, he defies them and remains at the beach, demanding acceptance," the description continues. "As the conflict escalates he is brought to the edge of his sanity and his identity is thrown into question."
Finnegan's lauded film Vivarium also premiered at Cannes Film Festival in 2019.
Other highlights at this year's festival include The Apprentice, which includes Dublin-based company Tailored Films among its producers. The film stars Sebastian Stan as Donald Trump, and follows his early career in '70s and '80s New York City.

The Barry Keoghan-starring Bird – which acclaimed Irish cinematographer Robbie Ryan worked on – has also been selected.
It was announced in December that Barbie director Greta Gerwig will serve as this year's president of the Cannes Film Festival Jury.
