In September, Farrell and McDonagh were both honoured at the Venice International Film Festival for their work on the dark comedy, with Farrell winning Best Actor and McDonagh winning Best Screenplay.
The Banshees of Inisherin is Martin McDonagh's dark exploration of the end of a friendship between Pádraic (Colin Farrell) and Colm (Brendan Gleeson). Set on a remote island off the coast of Ireland, the film follows the stunned Pádraic, who is aided by his sister Siobhán (Kerry Condon) and troubled young islander Dominic (Barry Keoghan), as he endeavors to repair the relationship.
Previous recipients of the Desert Palm Achievement Award include Jeff Bridges, Bradley Cooper, Daniel Day-Lewis and Colin Firth. Six actors - Andrew Garfield, Matthew McConaughey, Gary Oldman, Sean Penn, Brad Pitt and Eddie Redmayne - went on to win the Academy Award for Best Actor in the years they were honoured.
The Oscar nominees will be announced on January 24th.
