With the hotly anticipated rom-com Rye Lane hitting cinemas on Friday, we’re counting down the week by focusing on a different tune from its brilliant soundtrack each day. On the penultimate day – the acclaimed movie opens tomorrow! – it’s the turn of ‘Shoop’ by hip-hop icons Salt-N-Pepa.
As well as incorporating grime, reggae, electro, Afrobeat and more, Rye Lane’s superb soundtrack boasts a generous helping of classic hits. And tunes don’t come much more iconic than ‘Shoop’, a smash going all the way back to 1993, from New York hip-hop icons Salt-N-Pepa.
They’d had huge hits with singles like ‘Push It’ (1985), ‘Do You Want Me’ and ‘Let’s Talk About Sex’ (both 1991). But the gloriously funky ‘Shoop’ (1993) helped push them onto a higher plane entirely, with its parent album Very Necessary going five times platinum in the US and charting all over the world. The track boasts an irresistible rhythm, as well as vocals filled with wit and attitude, all of which catapulted it into the US Top 5, as well as the Top 20 in both Ireland and the UK.
Along with other hip-hop classics on the soundtrack – like A Tribe Called Quest’s magical ‘Buggin’ Out’ – ‘Shoop’ perfectly embodies the vibrancy and personality of Rye Lane adding to its must-watch momentum.
