Galway-based production company Danu Media has announced its acquisition of the rights to Irish author Lisa McInerney’s debut novel The Glorious Heresies for an upcoming TV adaptation.
Since its release in 2015, The Glorious Heresies has won the 2016 Desmond Elliott Prize for debut fiction, was shortlisted for Best Newcomer at the Irish Book Awards and won the Bailey's Women's Prize for fiction in 2016.
The book was named a Book of the Year by both The Irish Times and The Guardian.
The CEO of Danu Media, John Brady, said: "When we first read Glorious Heresies, we were immediately captivated by Lisa's lyrical narrative. It felt fresh, bold and exactly what we were looking for.
"For us, character and story are key, and Lisa balances both delicately in this unforgiving, raw, and sometimes comic love letter to Cork city. We're incredibly excited and grateful to be trusted with this project, and we're looking forward to working with Lisa on bringing this story to the screen."

Lisa will also be writing the series. She said: "I am so excited to work with the Danu team on bringing this very Irish saga to the screen. It's such a privilege to be able to revisit and reimagine this story for a new audience, and to be able to spend time again with my cast of misfits and chancers. I'm really looking forward to this new chapter."
In an interview with Hot Press, Lisa McInerney spoke about her connections to Cork, class, gender, and the characters in her The Glorious Heresies trilogy.
She said: "I'm from a working class family – so when I'm drawn to characters, they tend to be working class ones," she says. "And not just because I feel that these characters are overlooked in fiction – even though they are. It's just what I'm drawn to."
The book will be re-released later this year as part of John Murray's new JM Classics series, which celebrates the publisher's 250-year history. The Glorious Heresies has been chosen as one of the inaugural titles in the collection.
