DFCC's poll doesn't include many Irish names this year.
The Dublin Film Critics Circle (DFCC) have revealed their annual awards list. Noah Baumbach's Marriage Story has been named best film of 2019 in the 13th poll from DFCC.
Baumbach's study of a bitter divorce between two bohemians scored near-unprecedented success across the categories. Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson triumphed as, respectively, best actor and best actress. Baumbach took the prize for best screenplay.
In another sign that Netflix is increasingly making the running at awards season, Martin Scorsese's The Irishman was comfortably ahead of the following pack in second place of the best film category. In addition, the iconic filmmaker swept the award for best director.
The DFCC also awarded two breakthrough awards. Irish actress Aisling Franciosci won the prize for her performance in Jennifer Kent's The Nightingale and Kantemir Balagov, whose Russian film Beanpole astonished towards the end of the year was named best breakthrough director.
Irish films are notable for therein absence from the Top 10. Other than Franciosci, it is only in the Best Actress category that Irish names feature at all, with Jessie Buckley (No.5) and Saoirse Ronan (No.7).

The Irish production company Element Pictures gets a nod with the selection of The Favourite at No.7 in the best films category.
While it was hardly a vintage year, the directors of Float Like A Butterfly (Carmel Winters), Papi Chulo (John Butler), Metal Heart (Hugh O'Conor) and The Hole in the Ground (Lee Cronin) might have hoped for some form of recognition.
