In 2020, Fiona Apple said she would give the song's movie and TV sync royalties to the Harlem Children's Zone.
Last year, Fiona Apple pledged to donate all proceeds from TV and movie placements of her tracks 'Shameika' and 'Heavy Balloon' to charity for the next two years. With the recent release of Candyman, featuring Fetch the Bolt Cutters song 'Shameika', Apple will be donating funds to the Harlem Children's Zone.
The new movie, Candyman, is a "spiritual sequel" to a 1992 horror classic by the same name, directed by Nia DaCosta and produced by Jordan Peele. Apple's song plays in the background on a record player during a scene set in an art critic's apartment.
The singer-songwriter explained her change of heart about sync requests last March, and what inspired her decision to help those in need during the coronavirus pandemic.
In a video, Apple said, “I had to reprimand myself yesterday because I got an email entitled ‘sync request’. And when you get ‘sync request’, it means that somebody wants to use one of your songs in something. And so I read the email and I saw they wanted to use one of my songs for something that I thought was ridiculously stupid.
“So I said no. I sent the email back, declined. I walked away, and in 10 seconds, I was like, ‘You motherfucker!’ to myself. ‘You asshole greedy motherfucker bitch!’ Because it’s not a time to be turning down thousands of dollars that you could get for doing nothing, Fiona, when people need money.”

Apple generously vowed to donate $50,000 (£36,343) to two charities, Harlem Children's Zone for her song 'Shameika' and Seeding Sovereignty for 'Heavy Balloon' should no syncs materialize.
Apple donated 2019 and 2020 earnings from TV and movie placements of her classic single 'Criminal' to the While They Wait fund, an organisation helping refugees secure life necessities, immigration fees, and legal assistance.
Apple recently won the prize for Best Rock Performance at the 2021 Grammy Awards for “Shameika,” with Fetch the Bolt Cutters winning Best Alternative Music Album.
