The first trailer for Alec Baldwin’s Western Rust has been released, offering a glimpse at the film nearly three years after the on-set shooting that halted its production.
Cinematographer Halyna Hutchins was killed in October 2021 when a live round was fired from a revolver held by actor and producer Baldwin during a rehearsal on set in New Mexico. Writer-director Joel Souza was also wounded in the process.
Baldwin was later charged with involuntary manslaughter, though the case was dismissed in July 2023 on the grounds that the prosecution had failed to turn over evidence. However, armorer Hannah Gutierrez Reed was found guilty and is currently serving an 18-month sentence for her role in the incident, after it was determined that a live bullet had been loaded into Baldwin’s prop gun.
Following the tragedy, filming was shut down for over a year before resuming in April 2023, relocating from New Mexico to Montana. Bianca Cline stepped in as cinematographer to complete the film.
Set in 1880s Kansas and Wyoming, Rust stars Baldwin, 67, as Harland Rust, an outlaw who emerges from hiding to rescue his 13-year-old grandson (Patrick Scott McDermott), sentenced to hang for accidentally killing a rancher. On the run, the pair are pursued by relentless bounty hunter Fenton “Preacher” Lang, played by Travis Fimmel.

Rust had its world premiere at the Camerimage Film Festival in Poland in late 2023, but has yet to secure a North American distribution deal.
As reported by People, the film will arrive in select U.S theatres and on digital platforms on May 2.
