A trio of Fox News employees (Charlize Theron, Nicole Kidman and Margot Robbie) comes together to take down media mogul Roger Aisles.
Bombshell is already creating Oscar buzz and the first trailer for the drama proves why: Charlize Theron absolutely immerses herself into the role of Fox News anchor Megyn Kelly to a point where she's barely recognisable. She is backed up by Nicole Kidman's Gretchen Carlson and Margot Robbie's Kayla Pospisil.
The film is based on the real-life takedown of media mogul Roger Ailes (John Lithgow) who was accused of sexual harassment by multiple women, including Kidman's character, TV journalist Gretchen Carlson, who was the first to pursue legal action against the Fox News founder.
She finds support in Megyn Kelly who also experienced her fair share of sexual harassment and misogynistic behaviour, not only by Ailes but by Donald Trump as well. During the presidential campaign in 2015, the now President of the United States criticised Kelly's questioning of his treatment of women, stating, "There was blood coming out of her eyes. Blood coming out of her wherever." This also features in the trailer with Theron's character realising, "Did he just accuse me of anger menstruating?!"
The trio is completed by Robbie's Kayla Pospisil, a young producer and fictional character that was created for the film but is inspired by multiple women who came forward as the case against Ailes began to form. The trailer includes a scene where Pospisil asks Ailes for a job in front of the camera to which the Fox News CEO responds that she "has to find a way to prove that she's loyal". Somehow, the haunting sound of Billie Eilish's 'Bad Guy' fits that creepy subtext-heavy scene perfectly.
