The documentary seeks to shine an inquisitive spotlight on the boy band backbone – the superfans that lift them up.
Director and producer Gia Coppola has announced her entrance into the documentary field, set to direct Superfans: Screaming. Crying. Throwing Up, a docu-film exploring boy band fan culture. It will seek to answer the question: what makes a superfan tick?
Inspired by Maria Sherman’s 2020 book Larger Than Life: A History of Boy Bands from NKOTB to BTS, the documentary film will similarly explore the influence of boy band admiration and die-hard allegiance from the ‘80s to modernity, through New Edition and One Direction. Coppola will have twofold authority over the project, co-producing the film as well alongside Jason Bateman’s production company, Aggregate Films.

Coppola’s last full-length project was Mainstream in 2020, starring Andrew Garfield and Maya Hawke. The young creative has also directed stellar music videos, from Yves Tumor’s ‘Applaud’ to Blood Orange’s ‘You’re Not Good Enough.’
The all-encompassing devotion that comes with the territory of being an acclaimed ‘superfan’ produces a curiosity for outsiders. Coppola knows this territory well though, admitting upon the announcement of the film, “I'm a proud pop fangirl, so the opportunity to translate Maria's contemporary, sharp, fun book into documentary form, a format I've been craving to dabble in, is beyond exciting.”
Superfans: Screaming. Crying. Throwing Up, is in-the-works and has yet to announce a release date.
