Greta Gerwig announced as co-writer on Margot Robbie's Barbie movie
Barbie is coming to life
A new Barbie movie is in the works and is beginning to take shape. After Margot Robbie was announced to star as the famous doll, it's now revealed that Greta Gerwig and husband Noah Baumbach will co-write the script for the movie.
According to Variety, Gerwig is also being considered as a director. The actress, screenwriter and producer made her solo directorial debut with 2017's Lady Bird.
At Fortune's Brainstorm Tech conference on Monday, Robbie Brenner, the executive producer of Mattel Films, spoke out about the signing of Gerwig: "She loves Barbie. She's so passionate about this, she grew up with Barbie, and it's going to be a very, very exciting collaboration."
The producer adds that the movie will have a message of female empowerment and will tackle the theme of the famous doll differently than before: "I do think it's important to push the boundaries and push the limits. And I think people are really ready to see something different."
Greta Gerwig is currently directing the new adaption of Little Women, starring Saoirse Ronan, Meryl Streep, Emma Watson, Laura Dern and Timothée Chalamet.
