After spending several years as an actress and screenwriter, Gerwig made big waves with her solo directorial debut on the 2017 film Ladybird. She followed that success with Little Women in 2019, both coming of age films centred primarily on the complex and dynamic relationships between the women whose stories are told.
Both films were nominated for Academy Awards: Best Director and Best Original Screenplay for Ladybird, and Best Adapted Screenplay for Little Women.
Gerwig's much-anticipated take on the world of Barbie will premier July 21, starring Margot Robbie as Barbie and Ryan Gosling as Ken.
She also wrote the screenplay for the upcoming Disney adaptation of Snow White directed by Marc Webb and starring Rachel Zegler and Gal Gadot. The film is scheduled for release in 2024.
