Composer Hans Zimmer received the second Academy Award of his career for his experimental compositions in Dennis Villeneuve’s Dune.
At last night's Oscars ceremony, Hans Zimmer took home the Academy Award for Best Original Score for his work in Dune.
He beat out scores by Germaine Franco (Encanto), Nicholas Britell (Don’t Look Up), Alberto Iglesias (Parallel Mothers) and Jonny Greenwood (The Power of the Dog).
Zimmer, who is currently on a concert tour through Europe, did not attend the ceremony in person but delivered an acceptance speech in his bathrobe at an Amsterdam hotel. Zimmer thanked all the musicians and vocalists who contributed to the score, many of whom are now on tour with him.
Thank you to @TheAcademy, but most importantly, to all the @DuneMovie musicians and our leader Denis Villeneuve. pic.twitter.com/XbVBYJ8dHY

The twelve time Oscar nominee has scored over 200 films including Gladiator, Sherlock Holmes, Pirates of the Caribbean, and Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight Trilogy. He won his first Oscar for 1994’s The Lion King.

Zimmer had previously worked with Dune director Dennis Villeneuve on another science fiction adaptation, 2017’s Blade Runner 2049. Zimmer's score received immediate praise upon Dune's release for its experimental and deeply immersive soundscape. By superimposing the sounds of vocals, synthesisers, electric guitars, and even bagpipes, he created a score that is equal parts entrancing and unsettling.
Hans Zimmer's win was one of several awards given for the craftsmanship of Dune at last night's ceremony. The film also took home awards for Best Cinematography, Best Sound, Best Film Editing, Best Visual Effects, and Best Production Design.
Hans Zimmer Live is touring Europe until April 30th, having wowed Dublin crowds last week.
