Irish director John Carney's musical-comedy Flora and Son, which was acquired by Apple Original Films following its debut at Sundance Film Festival, is set for submission for Best Original Song at this year's Oscars.

Variety has reported that out of the 18 song tracklist, Apple has chosen to submit 'High Life,' a song composed by Carney, Gary Clark and star Eve Hewson. In the film, the song is performed by Hewson, Orén Kinlan, Jack Reynor and Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

Shot on location in Dublin's city centre, Flora and Son stars Hewson (daughter of U2's Bono) as a struggling single mother living in The Liberties, attempting to rekindle her relationship with her estranged son, through the connective power of music.

Fishing a battered old guitar from a skip, with the intentions of gifting it to her son, Flora instead keeps it for herself, taking up music lessons with guitar teacher and washed-up musician, Jeff (Joseph Gordon Levitt).

Third in a trilogy of Dublin-based music films by Carney, following the majorly successful Once (2007) and Sing Street (2016); Flora and Son once again entwines music with Carney's reoccurring preoccupation, urban Irish life.

“It was supposed to be this weird family on stage,” Carney told Variety. “The son rapping, Flora playing guitar badly and a guy in LA who’s mic’d up his drummer. And a failed rockstar in Dublin, who didn’t make it and now lives in his grandmother’s house, playing the bass."

"I loved the idea of walking past that bar and looking in and going, ‘What the actual fuck is going on in there?’ Then, somebody would say, ‘That’s Flora from the flats and her son.’ To me, that was just a great story. But also believable," Carney continued.

Carney's star-studded film may be headed for Irish awards success; also being submitted for best picture (Anthony Bregman, John Carney, Peter Cron, Rebecca O’Flanagan, Robert Walpole), director (John Carney), actress (Eve Hewson) and original screenplay (John Carney).

Flora and Son is set to hit Irish cinemas on Friday 22 September, and will be available to watch on Apple TV+ on Friday 29 September.
