Irish produced Poor Things makes history at the 96th Academy Awards winning four Oscars
The four good statues won on Sunday night mark the biggest Oscar haul of any Irish produced film.
Poor Things, produced and developed by Ed Guiney and Andrew Lowe and the team at Dublin based Element Pictures, won four awards at the 96th Academy Awards including Best Actress for Emma Stone, Best Production Design, Best Makeup & Hairstyling, Best Costume Design.
This is the most wins for an Irish produced film ever, bringing the total number of Academy Awards won by production studio to six. Element Pictures now has more Oscars under their belt than any other Irish production company has won in the history of the awards.
Producer Ed Guiney said he was "absolutely thrilled" with Sunday night's results.
"It has a huge impact" Guiney Said.
"For instance, when we had the 11 nominations, we went from 500 [cinema] screens to 2,500 screens, and now that we have had these wins this weekend, we are now out on digital platforms like Hulu and Apple and all that kind of stuff".
The Co CEOs and founders of Element Pictures, producers Ed Guiney and Andrew Lowe, said: "We were delighted to have been nominated for these awards and to get that recognition from the Academy for our immensely talented cast and creative team on Poor Things was amazing but to win four awards is truly a dream come true".
Expressing thanks to both Lanthimos and Oscar winner Emma Stone the Co CEOs said: "This was an incredible project to work on with our brilliant director Yorgos Lanthimos and Emma Stone, our phenomenal lead actress and producing partner and we are so delighted she won Best Actress".
"It’s particularly gratifying that the Academy has recognised the incredibly imaginative, ambitious, and iconic work of our talented team– all working together in creative harmony in service of a unique directorial vision".
It was also a successful night for other Irish talent at the oscars, notably Cillian Murphy who took home the gong for Best Actor in a lead role for his performance of JJ Oppenheimer in Christopher Nolan's blockbuster biopic.
Mr Guiney also congratulated Murphy who told him that this year was akin to the Irish film industry's Italia '90.
"It has been great. I mean, we could not be happier really there is the juggernaut of Oppenheimer."
Poor Things was the second most successful film at the awards show taking home four academy awards total.
Oppenheimer was the biggest winner of the night, taking home seven gongs in total which were as follows: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Supporting Actor, Best Cinematography, Best Original Score, and Best Editing.
Poor Things builds on the successful working relationship that Element Pictures has developed with Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos which dates back more than ten years. They have produced all of his English language films, including The Lobster which stars Colin Farrell, Killing of the Sacred Deer which features both Farrell and Barry Keoghan, and The Favourite, which also features Emma Stone.
The studio and Lanthimos are currently working on another film together Kinds of Kindness.
Element Pictures, established in 2001 and based on O’Connell Street in Dublin, to date received 26 Academy Award nominations and 6 wins, along with 14 Golden Globe nominations and 2 wins, 37 BAFTA nominations and 10 wins, 44 IFTA’s and 13 European Film Awards making it Ireland's most decorated studio.
