The search is over for who will play the King of Pop, Michael Jackson, on the big-screen in Lionsgate's upcoming biopic, Michael. His nephew, Jaafar Jackson, a rising Los Angeles singer, songwriter, and entertainment talent, has been confirmed as the lead role.

Jaafar Jackson is the second youngest son to singer-songwriter and producer, Jermaine Jackson. Both the late Michael Jackson and Jermaine Jackson were members of the Jackson Five, the family boy band that drew acclaim throughout the 1960s.

Reportedly, while the Jackson estate will be involved with the production, it will delve into both the ups and downs - including more notable controversies of Michael Jackson's life.

Streaming platform HBO came under intense criticism for focusing on the accusations of sexual abuse in their documentary Leaving Neverland, the estate calling it "tabloid character assassination" and levying a $100 million lawsuit against the service.

Michael Jackson denied the allegations prior to his death in 2009 and was acquitted in 2005. The singer's family has remain stalwart in defending his legacy and image.

The 26-year-old tweeted Monday that he was "humbled and honoured to bring my Uncle Michael's story to life."

Antoine Fuqua will be directing the biopic for Lionsgate, the script for Michael written by John Logan and the project produced by the Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody's producer, Graham King. Bohemian Rhapsody received four Oscars in 2019.

“I met Jaafar over two years ago and was blown away by the way he organically personifies the spirit and personality of Michael,” King said. “It was something so powerful that even after conducting a worldwide search, it was clear that he is the only person to take on this role.”
