The film was directed and adapted by filmmaker Paloma Baeza from an original short story by Hanya Yanagihara.
Jessie Buckley has been cast as the narrator to the forthcoming short film from British filmmaker Paloma Baeza which boasts hand-drawn animation.
Now in post-production, Three Hares was directed and adapted by Baeza from a short story by Hanya Yanagihara, the author of The People in the Trees, A Little Life, To Paradise, and editor-in-chief of T: The New York Times Style Magazine.
Reported by Variety, the ecologically-focused film enfolds a captivating creation myth of the ancient three hares symbol into an environmentally-conscious tale about three sisters. Like their lagomorphic counterparts, the siblings are tasked with imploring mankind to respect the environment in order to preserve posterity and safeguard the future.
Oscar, BAFTA and recent IFTA nominee Jessie Buckley - also known for her musical collaborations with Bernard Butler - will narrate Three Hares, which also features an original score by two-time Oscar-winning composer Gustavo Santaolalla (Brokeback Mountain, Babel) and co-composer Juan Luqui (The Last of Us).

The film’s all-female production team is led by Amy Nauiokas and Rebecca Choi at Archer Gray (Can You Ever Forgive Me?, 20th Century Women, Lost Girls); Ruth Fielding, Camilla Deakin and Vanessa Wheeler under the Lupus Films banner (Kensuke’s Kingdom, Ethel & Ernest); and Beth Hutchens.
Award-winning animation director Neil Boyle (Kensuke’s Kingdom, The Last Belle) and art directors Sharon Liu (The Tiger Who Came to Tea, Nina Simone: Colour Is a Beautiful Thing) and Aaron Lampert (Isle of Dogs, The Lost Weekend: A Love Story) oversaw the animation department and led a small team of artists at Lupus Films’ studio in London.
“Making this film felt like carving a rare and delicate gem,” Baeza says. “Our exceptionally talented team of committed animators and designers created a rich visual canvas, elevated beyond our expectations by Gustavo and Juan’s immersive, magical score, and the enigmatic warmth of Jessie’s voice. It has been an inspiring collaboration, all in service of delivering an urgent message we firmly believe in.”
