The film premiere of The Wonder will take place on October 26 at the Lighthouse Cinema in Smithfield, Dublin.
Netflix announced today that it will be hosting the Irish premiere screening of The Wonder at Lighthouse Cinema on the evening of Wednesday, October 26th ahead of the film's Irish release on November 2nd.
The screening will be attended by director Sebastián Lelio along with starring actors Florence Pugh, Niamh Algar, Elaine and Kíla Lord Cassidy and author Emma Donoghue.
The Wonder is based off the 2016 novel by Donoghue, inspired by the "Fasting Girls" phenomenon of the 1800s, also known as "holy anorexia" when young women would claim to be able to survive without food or water.
Donoghue tells a tale of an English nurse named Lib Wright (Florence Pugh), who is summoned to a tiny village in the Irish Midlands in 1859 to observe 11-year-old Anna O'Donnell (Kíla Lord Cassidy) who has been considered a medical anomaly. Tourists have swarmed to the small town to witness the miracle child whom has managed to go without food for four months, claiming to survive by "manna from heaven". It is a story of challenging faith, love and evil and womanhood in all its forms.
The Wonder was transformed for the screen by Oscar-winning filmmaker Lelio into a gripping psychological Irish drama. Co-written by both Lelio and Donoghue along with Alice Birch, the thriller stars Pugh as the protagonist along with Tom Burke as the persistent journalist, Elaine and Kíla Lord Cassidy as Anna and her mother Rosaleen, Niamh Algar as Kitty, and Toby Jones, David Wilmot, Ciarán Hinds, Dermot Crowley and Brian F. O' Byrne as the committee members.
