Netflix to release Bradley Cooper-directed Leonard Bernstein film
The film has an exteremely accomplished roster, including production credits from Martin Scorsese, Steven Speilberg, Todd Phillips and Emma Tillinger Koskoff ('The Irishman,' 'Joker')
Netflix has acquired all rights to the untitled Leonard Bernstein film that Bradley Cooper will direct, star in and produce, Deadline reports. The script is a collaboration with Oscar-winning Spotlight writer Josh Singer.
The film isn't considered a traditional biopic, according to Deadline, as it focuses on the complex relationship between Bernstein and his wife, Chilean actress Felicia Montealegre. Bernstein was also an outspoken activist and is well-known for his orchestral pieces, such as the musical West Side Story and his Oscar-nominated film score for On the Waterfront.
Cooper is no stranger to musical drama films. He made his directorial debut in 2018 with Oscar-nominated film A Star is Born, featuring Lady Gaga. Much like the upcoming film, he also starred in and produced A Star is Born.
The Bernstein film is brimming with accomplished talent. Producers include top names like Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg, Joker director Todd Phillips and The Irishman and Joker double Oscar-nominated producer Emma Tillinger Koskoff. Production on the film is expected to begin early next year.
Netflix will secure the film a limited theatrical run to ensure award season eligibility, like it did with Oscar-nominated films Marriage Story and The Irishman.
