Netflix's new film Joy follows the story of the birth of IVF.
Netflix’s new film Joy tells the story of the birth of Louise Joy Brown in 1978, the world’s first ‘test-tube-baby’.
In collaboration with Three British Pioneer and One Vision, Netflix tells the tireless 10-year journey of Brown through the perspective of Jean Purdy, a young nurse and embryologist.
Purdy teamed up with scientist Robert Edwards and surgeon Patrick Steptoe to research infertility and create in vitro fertilisation (IVF). The film is meant to celebrate the perseverance of the workers in science and the visionary work of this trio which has allowed millions of people to have the families they have dreamed of.
The story was written by Rachel Mason and Jack Thorne and the film will be directed by Ben Taylor. The producers include Finola Dwyer and Amanda Posey with Cameron McCracken as the executive producer. The key cast members are James Norton, Bill Nighy and Thomasin McKenzie.
