Netflix continue their run of original sci-fi films (Annihilation, Cloverfield Paradox and Mute) with Extinction, starring Ant-Man scene stealer Michael Pena and The Interview star Lizzy Caplan.
Pena plays a father who has a recurring dream of losing his family during an alien invasion. His nightmare turns into reality when the planet is invaded by a force bent on destruction. Fighting for their lives, he comes to believe he has an unknown strength to keep them safe from harm: he can see the future via his dreams.
The film's original script from by Spenser Cohen had been included in the 2013 Black List of the year’s best unproduced scripts in Hollywood. Since then, the screenplay has been polished by Eric Heisserer, who earned a Best Adapted Screenplay nomination at the 89th Academy Awards for similar sci-fi Arrival.
The movie had originally been scheduled for a theatrical release last January by Universal Pictures. However, it was pulled from the schedule and later, reported that Netflix had acquired the film.
Luke Cage's Mike Colter also stars. The film is directed by Ben Young, who helmed the critically acclaimed Australian thriller Hounds of Love.
