A new Amy Winehouse biopic is set to be directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson.
A new Amy Winehouse biopic, sanctioned by the Amy Winehouse Estate, has been announced under the same title as her second studio album Back to Black. The film is set to be directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson who has previously worked on projects like Nowhere Boy and Fifty Shades of Grey. The script is currently in the hands of Matt Greenhalgh who's worked on other musician biopics including Control on Joy Division. Studiocanal, Alison Owen, Debra Hayward and Tracey Seaward are all part of the production team.

There have been previous attempts to kickstart a Winehouse biopic before but they have fumbled in the face of navigating music rights. This includes a rumoured project written and directed by Irish filmmaker Kristen Sheridan and staring Noomi Rapace as Winehouse and a 2018 biopic produced by Alison Owen and Debra Hayward.
Now, with the support of the Amy Winehouse Estate- including that of her father Mitchell Winehouse- there's hope that this one will proceed more smoothly. And while a biopic has been elusive before now, the 2015 documentary Amy created by Asif Kapadia won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature Film.

This project is separate from the 2018 documentary Amy Winehouse: Back to Black which charts the creating of her second studio album by the same name.
