Grammy-nominated indie artist Phoebe Bridgers surprised her audience with a guest appearance from Normal People’s Paul Mescal at Coachella’s final weekend.
Phoebe Bridgers had quite the year in 2021, as the California singer-songwriter scored a well-deserved Grammy for her indie-rock record Punisher. Yet, 2022 is proving to be just as bright. The musician took part in Indio's Coachella Festival, taking the stage for two consecutive weekends and bringing out a special guest for her final performance.
Normal People star Paul Mescal joined Bridgers for the explosive Punisher track ‘I Know the End’ and amplified the atmosphere as he jumped around onstage while the song burst through its climactic bridge.
Bridgers’ fans have taken to Twitter to re-dub the festival #Phoebechella, with many gushing over the pair’s surprise appearance.

The duo were friends and admirers of one another’s work before going Instagram official last December in a selfie posted to Bridgers’ page. Coachella was not Mescal’s first appearance during his partner’s performances, either. The Maynooth actor joined Bridgers on an Instagram livestream for Wonderland Magazine in 2020 to gush over the singer’s music.

The indie artist isn't shy about her enduring love for Sally Rooney, either. In an interview with Hot Press prior to the release of Punisher, Bridgers spoke about the necessary portrayal of millennial relationships in Normal People, commenting, "They’re constantly miscommunicating. It’s so painful, but it’s beautiful."
Bridgers recently released ‘Sidelines,’ a brand-new single that will appear in Sally Rooney’s second TV adaptation, Conversations with Friends, premiering May 15. The Cali-based musician is scheduled to perform in Mescal's home territory at Dublin’s outdoor Fairview Park on June 20, so the chances of another surprise duet are anything but slim.
