Rye Lane brilliantly showcases the vibrant cultural life of the titular Peckham neighbourhood, one of the true jewels of the English capital.
Rye Lane’s most famous venue is the Bussey Building, a multi-storey arts complex housing CLF Art Café; record shop Rye Wax; Rooftop Film Club; Yogarise; and The Yard gym. In the 19th century, the building was originally a gun factory and shooting range, while in the ’90s it became an artists’ space.
Art and Culture
The Bussey Building is far from the only cultural venue in Peckham. The Museum of Contemporary Art sits on Bellenden Road; the Hannah Barry Gallery exhibits a wide range of artists across different disciplines; and the South London Gallery features new and emerging artists.
Diverse Food Options
Along with new and trendy restaurants, there’s an incredible mix of food stalls, shops and street vendors. Salas food truck always has a queue for its Turkish-inspired wraps, while Asian Takeaway is a tiny stall serving naan, kebabs, curries and gorgeous dishes cooked in its tandoor. Another gem is Kurdish restaurant Yadas, offering delicious dishes – including lamb, chicken shawarma and kubba.
Shopping
Peckham is overflowing with small independent brands and boutiques such as Roya, an independent fabric and textile shop that’s a riot of colour and culture. Wavey Garms is a tiny vintage shop in Holdron’s Arcade that started off as a Facebook group in 2013, where friends could trade hard-to-find ’80s and ’90s streetwear.
Holdron’s Arcade is also where you’ll find Love’s, a small boutique selling African men’s and womenswear (unfortunately it's since closed down). D.A.Y. offers Scandi-inspired clothing and accessories from all around the world, and if you’re on Bellenden Road, your eyes will be drawn to the bright yellow storefront of Form SE15, a boutique for men and women that updates its stock on a daily basis. If you like to thrift-shop, be sure to visit the trendy charity shop, Traid.
Notably, Peckham was also where Rihanna shot the campaign for her fashion brand Fenty, adding to the caché of what is now an uber-chic area. Go see it – and enjoy!
The new issue of Hot Press is out now, starring The Edge.
