The project is set to be the first film to be made about the legendary rock singer
Shailene Woodley has been cast to play Janis Joplin in an upcoming film about the 1960s psychedelic artist.
Though the film's title has yet to be announced, the production has received a $2.5 million (€2.3 million) taxpayer-funded credit from California's Film and Television Tax Credit Program.
Woodley spoke of the film's setting saying, "California meant so much to Janis Joplin — from the stoops of San Francisco to the wooden walls of Sunset Sound, the state became the stage upon which she explored not just the world of music, but the world of her vibrant humanity.”
There have been several failed attempts to recreate a Janis Joplin Bipoic. The most notable attempt in 1979 with director Mark Rydell's The Rose, failed when Joplin's family refused producers the rights to her music.
Other stars attached to failed Janis Joplin film projects include Michelle Williams, P!nk and Courtney Love. After dropping out of filming, P!nk stated a biopic will never happen because Joplin “doesn’t want it made.”

The release date for the film has not been revealed, though the movie is slated to be shot for 30 days in California.
