It's not Ogre yet - the news was confirmed on the beloved animated franchie's official social media accounts.
Shrek 5 is officially in the works, with the core voice cast of Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz and Eddie Murphy all confirmed to return.
DreamWorks confirmed the news on Wednesday, pegging the film’s release for July 1, 2026.
A hit in the box office and amongst critics, the first Shrek film landed in 2001 – racking up $487m (€450m) worldwide. It became the first animated film to be nominated for the Palme d’Or in Cannes and won the inaugural animated feature category at the Oscar’s.
A series of sequels subsequently followed. Shrek 2 became the franchise’s highest-grossing film, with almost a billion-dollar global box office, before Shrek the Third and Shrek Forever After landed in 2007 and 2010 respectively.
The franchise also spawned a number of spin-offs, with Puss in Boots and Puss in Boots: The Last Wish being centred around the sword-slinging cat voiced by Antonio Banderas. It is yet to be confirmed whether or not the Spanish actor will return for Shrek 5.
Comedy veteran Eddie Murphy – who voiced Shrek’s mouthy yet loyal sidekick Donkey in each of the previous Shrek movies – hinted at another instalment in the franchise when speaking to Collider last month.
