John Banville's The Black-Eyed Blonde: A Philip Marlowe Novel comes to the screen in Marlowe.
This past week, Sky revealed the official trailer for Marlowe, a new Sky original set in the disillusioned and thrilling era of 1930s Los Angeles. Starring Liam Neeson, Diane Kruger and Jessica Lange, the film delves into the seedy underbelly of Hollywood’s golden age.
The story follows private detective Phillip Marlowe, played by Neeson, who is hired by a dazzling Irish-American heiress Clare Cavendish, played by Kruger, to track down her disappeared ex-lover. While apparently an open and shut case, Marlowe is quickly dragged into the crossfire of Cavendish and her famous screen actress mother Dorothy Quincannon, played by Lange.
Based on Raymond Chandler’s stories following the character, this is not the first time Detective Marlowe has been portrayed on the big screen.
However, this modern adaptation is not directly taken from Chandler. It is instead adapted from a novel by Irish author John Banville, who took great inspiration from the British-American novelist. Banville crafted his work with an obvious devotion to the original film noir atmosphere, and his work contains necessary trappings of the original character.
