Squid Game will return two years from now, assures Korean director Hwang Dong-hyuk.
South Korean Netflix drama Squid Game fans will have to wait two more years for the graphic series to return for its second season.
“Hopefully, I can show it to the fans by the end of 2024," showrunner Hwang Dong-hyuk said at this year's Cannes MIPTV festival, tentatively.
Few other details concerning the second season have been publicly released, though some ideas may already be in place.
"It's in my head right now,” Hwang added, “I’m in the planning process currently. But I do think it’s too early to say when and how that’s going to happen."
He also revealed that, so far, only three pages have been written of the Squid Game season 2 script.
Less than a year after its initial 2021 release, fans are already speculating on what this new iteration will entail. While many of the show's primary characters were killed off in season one, the Korean director offers some hope for the departed: "I'll try something to bring them back to season 2."
A three year gap is a relatively small wait considering the show's lengthy history. The K-drama was first conceived as a feature film as long ago as 2009. While explaining the difficult creative process of adapting the story from large to small screen, Hwang laughs, "It was hell. Maybe season two will be my last series."
Contrarily, Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos assured audiences that “the Squid Game universe has just begun.” Being the most watched Netflix series ever with 1.68 billion viewers in the month following its release, it was unlikely the show would disappear without a trace.
Fans of the show should also look forward to the Korean director's newly penned film, Killing Old People Club. The forthcoming movie is expected to be even more violent than his debut Netflix series. No release date has yet been announced for this controversial new film.
