Superman actor Dean Cain has accused the series' comic-book writers of ‘bandwagoning’ after they announced that the superhero is bisexual.

The Man of Steel in question here is not the nerdy reporter Clark Kent, but rather his son Jon. Taking on the iconic red cape from his father, the upcoming issues will see the young superhero fall for a male reporter. The storyline announcement was made to coincide with National Coming Out Day.

Dean Cain, who played the iconic Kryptonian in the 1993 television series Lois & Clark: The New Adventures Of Superman, did not take the news well. Appearing on conservative TV programme Fox and Friends, the actor disagreed with the claim that the authors were bringing the superhero in a new and bold direction.

"They said it's a bold new direction. I say they're bandwagoning,” the actor said. "Robin just came out as bi - who's really shocked about that one? The new Captain America is gay. My daughter in Supergirl, where I played the father, was gay. So I don't think it's a bold or brave or some crazy new direction. If they had done this 20 years ago, perhaps that would be brave or bold."

"Brave would be having him fighting for the rights of gay people in Iran where they'll throw you off a building for the offense of being gay,'' Cain continued. ''They're talking about having him fight climate change and the deportation of refugees and he's dating a hacktivist - whatever a hacktivist is. Why don't they have him fight the injustices that created the refugees whose deportation he's protesting?"

Series writer Tom Taylor responded to the accusatory claims, arguing that aside from a few trolls the majority of the response to the series has been overwhelmingly positive. This is not the first time DC has announced that one of it’s superhero’s was bisexual, with Batman’s sidekick Robin having come out in August.

So Dean Cain apparently is upset that the new Superboy in the comics is bisexual.
