The nominees for the 2024 Academy Awards have just been announced.
The nominees for the 96th Academy Awards have just been announced with Barbie, Oppenheimer, Killers Of The Flower Moon and Poor Things leading the charge and bringing in a rake of nominations each.
Irish actor Cillian Murphy was nominated for Best Actor in a Leading Role for his performance of J. Robert Oppenheimer in Christopher Nolan's biopic about the nuclear physicist. The film has been nominated in 13 different categories - more than any of it's competitor's at this year's Oscars. If Murphy wins his category, he will be the first actor born on the island of Ireland to do so.
Oppenheimer received critical acclaim over the summer of 2023 as it went head to head against it's box office rival Barbie. While Barbie smashed box office records, generating $1.5 billion at the box office, the film received only 8 academy award nominations- 5 fewer than that of Oppenheimer.
Some Barbie fans have noted that the film was snubbed for not receiving nominations for Best Director for Greta Gerwig nor a nod for Best Actress in a Leading Role for Margot Robbie, who played the iconic doll.
The Irish produced film Poor Things from Dublin's Element Pictures also received 11 nominations for the awards this year including one for Robbie Ryan for the category of Best Cinematography.
