Kidnap dramas, psychotic thrillers, sci-fi prequels and supernatural Sarf Landan takes are keeping Stuart Clark firmly planted on the sofa this month.
Eric ( Netflix)
From the creator of The Hour, The Iron Lady and The Split comes this frenetic drama about one of New York’s leading puppeteers whose personal and professional lives start unravelling after his titular nine-year old son goes missing. Set in the 1980s prior to Rudi Giuliani’s zero tolerance cleaning-up of the city – has there ever been a bigger fall from political grace? – the six-parter finds a crazed-and-getting-crazier Benedict Cumberbatch starring alongside Gabby Hoffmann and the magnificently named McKinley Belcher III who previously played Agent Trevor Evans in fifteen episodes of Ozark.
Supacell (Netflix)
UK spitter Andrew Onwubolu, AKA Rapman, writes and directs this drama about four seemingly ordinary black people from South London who suddenly develop extraordinary powers. It’s all very slickly executed with as many comedic moments as there are dramatic ones, and a hip hop soundtrack guaranteed to woof your woofers and do some very exciting things to your tweeters.
Star Wars: The Acolyte (June 5, Disney+)
Following the lukewarm responses to both The Book Of Boba Fett and Obi-Wan Kenobi, Lucasfilm looks to have steadied the spaceship with this High Republic prequel set before the events of the main Star Wars films. A respected Jedi Master is tasked with investigating a sinister series of crimes which appear to be linked to a former Padawan leader. Much intergalactic intrigue follows as the cast of young up-and-comers breathe much needed new life into the franchise.

Insomnia (Paramount+)
Based on the Sarah Pinborough bestseller of the same name, this taught thriller focuses on Emma who suddenly stops sleeping in the runup to her fortieth birthday, just like her mother did before suffering a violent psychotic breakdown. Dark family secrets resurface as she desperately tries to hang on to both her sanity and perfect family. Trapped, Baptiste and The Midwich Cuckoo man Börkur Sigthorsson gets the nightmarish best out of a cast that includes Vicky McClure, Tom Cullen and Dominic Tighe.
