The MTV VMAs took place last night, September 12, in the Prudential Center, New Jersey. Music industry stars stepped out in their finest garb for one of the hottest award nights in music, including the likes of Olivia Rodrigo, Selena Gomez, Taylor Swift, Lil Nas X, Ice Spice, Cardi B, and more.
To no surprise, with 11 nominations, Taylor Swift took the cake last night at the VMAs landing herself nine awards - just one off the record ten award sweep by Peter Gabriel in 1987. Swift's wins include Artist of the Year - where she was up against Beyoncé, Nicki Minaj, Doja Cat, Shakira and KAROL G. For the second year in a row Swift bagged herself the Video of the Year award. Last year for her 10-minute long short film for 'All Too Well' and this year for her self-directed 'Anti Hero' music video.
Best new artist went to Ice Spice who began her career in 2021 and has since taken the world by storm, with chart-toppers like 'Munch' and massive collaborations with huge stars such as Nicki Minaj. Minaj returned to emcee the show this year, as well as performing her new song 'Last Time I Saw You'. The rap-star proceeded to give fans a sneak peak of her new material. “MTV it wouldn’t be right if I didn’t give you a Pink Friday 2 exclusive,” Minaj stated before performing an unreleased song from her upcoming album.
Other performances included an exciting production from Olivia Rodrigo who shocked fans by pretending to have a stage malfunction. The singer began her performance with 'Vampire' her first single from sophmore album, GUTS, before a "stage malfunction" shut down the performance. A snippet of hit song 'Good For You' from debut release SOUR flashed for a few seconds before the stage cut to black leaving the crowd confused. Returning after her surprising stunt, the singer-songwriter launched into her new track 'Get Him Back'. Rodrigo certainly fooled the crowd as fellow singer Selena Gomez was shown looking quite startled at the prank.
