A trailer has been released for first-time writer/director Tony Kelly's upcoming sports comedy, The Hurler: A Campion's Tale.
The film is an adaptation of the popular award-winning web series of the same name created by Kelly, who also plays the titular has-been hurling player.
When the notorious hurling star Gar Campion becomes the first player in history to fail a test for performance-enhancing drugs, he unwillingly agrees to some charity work in order to rebuild his shattered reputation, coaching Ireland’s worst team. While in his new surroundings of Waterford and realising the mammoth task he’s undertaken, Gar runs into his teenage flame, Ruby Vercetti, and a new life seems a real prospect for him.
The upcoming film features an all-star cast, with Elva Trill (Jurassic World, Northern Lights) playing Ruby Vercetti opposite Kelly. The supporting cast is a powerhouse mix of a host of Irish film, television, and comedy legends such as Jon Kenny of D’Unbelievables as Gar’s coach and mentor, David McSavage of The Savage Eye, and Mario Rosenstock featuring as himself.
GAA fans are even treated to an appearance by commentary icon Marty Morrissey, who appears to be stretching his comedic chops in the film.

Kelly said: “This film has been the culmination of over ten years of blood, sweat, tears, laughs, rejections, and near misses. To have a cast and crew as talented as this come together with me to finally make it is more than a dream come true!”
The trailer promises the film will be ludicrous, funny, and ludicrously funny, with slapstick and plenty of crude, sharp-edged one-liners to entertain those who loved more notorious comedies such as The Hardy Bucks.
The Hurler made the news on the second day of its production last year, when director and lead actor Tony Kelly was concussed while filming with Marty Morrissey. Kelly made a recovery, and it is expected that The Hurler: A Campion’s Tale will be released later this year.
