A new film finds the late RTÉ reporter breaking one final story
An upcoming film, titled Ransom '79, will depict the final story of Irish reporter Charlie Bird before his life was cut short by Motor Neurone Disease (MND). The documentary explores Bird's investigation of "an extraordinary true crime story, one that had remained secret for decades - the attempt by a criminal gang to extort millions from the Irish government." The film will be released in cinemas from May 24, 2024.
Directed by Colm Quinn, the film portrays how Bird, despite battling MND, was determined to pursue the story. Speaking to RTÉ, Quinn recalls his discussions with Bird about the film, stating, "That he still wanted to pursue it while facing such a terrible illness is testament to his courage and determination."
Quinn added, "It was a privilege to travel around the country with him as he uncovered a truly unique story with his friend Colin Murphy. I know Charlie would be proud that his work has made it to the big screen, we miss him every day and feel very grateful to have helped him tell one last story."
Ransom '79 also shows how Bird's illness didn't deter him from pursuing the truth.
"I have a terminal illness but I still have a journalistic nose for a good story,” Charlie Bird says in the trailer.
