Brendan Gleeson will play King Duncan opposite Denzel Washington and Frances McDormand.
Brendan Gleeson stars in the new teaser-trailer for Academy Award-winner Joel Coen’s upcoming film, The Tragedy of Macbeth.
The Irish actor plays the role of King Duncan in a star-studded cast including Oscar winners Denzel Washington as Lord Macbeth and Frances McDormand as Lady Macbeth. The film will premiere in theatres on December 25th and arrives to Apple TV+ on January 14th, 2022.
The forthcoming film — shot entirely in black and white — is described as a “bold and fierce adaptation” of William Shakespeare’s iconic play Macbeth, “a tale of murder, madness, ambition, and wrathful cunning.”
The film marks writer-director Joel Coen’s first film without his brother and partner Ethan. The Independent reported that Ethan no longer wants to make movies, according to the duo’s long-time composer, Carter Burwell. They last worked together on the 2018 Netflix film The Ballad Of Buster Scruggs.
The Coen brothers, who brought audiences The Big Lebowski, Fargo and No Country For Old Men have a host of scripts written and shelved according to Burwell.

“They also have a tonne of scripts they’ve written together that are sitting on various shelves. I hope maybe they get back to those. I’ve read some of those, and they are great. We are all at an age where we just don’t know...we could all retire. It’s a wonderfully unpredictable business,” he said.
