Ciaran Cassidy's debut feature 'Jihad Jane' will open in Irish cinemas on 14th February.
In March 2010, Colleen LaRose was arrested in Waterford, Ireland, as part of a cell of Waterford-based terrorists who made plans to murder a Swedish cartoonist Lars Vilks, who had drawn the prophet Muhammad as a dog. Jihad Jane follows LaRose's story with unprecedented access, detailing her conversion to Islam and her extremist activities. She would later refer to herself as "Jihad Jane". The Waterford arrests were part of a US sweep on "the new face of terror", and LaRose served a lengthy prison sentence.
The film is directed by Ciaran Cassidy, produced by Morgan Bushe for Fastnet Films in coproduction with Silver Films AB and New Amsterdam Film Co. with funding from Screen Ireland, BAI, RTE, Section 481, Netherlands Film Fund, Netherlands Production Incentive, SVT and the Swedish Film Institute Co. It explores the post-9/11 sure of Islamaphobia in conjunction with the allure of Internet fanaticism.
