Following its premiere at Sundance this year, dark supernatural thriller You Won’t Be Alone is gearing up for a UK premiere at the London Film Festival on Friday, October 14. As Macedonian-Australian director Goran Stolevski’s feature-length directorial debut, the film builds on his roots in telling the story of a supernatural witch within a Macedonian village plagued by witchy superstitions.

Stolevski’s debut film premiered at Sundance to rave reviews, earning him a spot on Variety’s list of “Ten Directors To Watch.” Since its recent releases in the US and Australia, the film has garnered glowing praises from its audience so far, making its UK premiere tomorrow a hopeful event.

Starring Lamb’s Noomi Rapace, Alice Englert (Beautiful Creatures), Anamaria Marinca (4 Months, 3 Weeks And 2 Days), Félix Maritaud, Sara Klimoska, Carloto Cotta and Arta Dobroshi, You Won’t Be Alone chronicles the story of a shape-shifting witch. Set amidst Stolevski’s Macedonian roots in a 19th century village prone to folklore and superstitions.

The story follows Maria (played by Marinca), a centuries-old witch who abducts and raises the young Nevena (Klimoska) into one of her own. Upon her sixteenth birthday, Maria abandons the girl in the woods, where she accidentally kills a peasant woman (played by Rapace) and takes over her physical body. This incident leads Nevena through a path of killing and shape-shifting, as she navigates the wide-ranging human experience and confronts dark questions surrounding identity.

You Won’t Be Alone is a self-described “hauntingly humanistic, lyrical exploration of what it means to be human,” complete with the blood and gore of a perfect Halloween flick. With his inventive style and folktale-horror genre of storytelling, Stolevski’s directorial debut is worth the buzz surrounding its international release.
