Originally called the Municipal Gallery of Modern Art, the Hugh Lane Gallery was renamed in honour of its founder and holds the distinction of being the first modernart gallery in the world. Opened in 1908, the collection has grown to include over 200 unique art-pieces, including the first impressionist paintings in any gallery across Britain and Ireland. Notable exhibits include a reconstruction of Francis Bacon’s studio,
a room dedicated to Irish-born painter Sean Scully, and works by Renoir, Edouard Manet and Camille Pissarro. Beside the gallery’s reception is the stained glass room, which contains the remarkable Harry Clarke
piece The Eve of St. Agnes. The gallery is open Tuesday to Sunday, and admission is free.
