Red Carpet fashion at the biggest event in the Hollywood calendar
Ah, The Oscars. Without a doubt the most important event in awards season. These are the awards everyone really wants and the event for which the stars are sure to save their most stylish ensembles. Read on for our take on who wore whom.
Unsurprisingly, 'Best Supporting Actress' winner Lupita Nyong'o was one of the best dressed of the night. Star of 'Best Picture' winner 12 Years A Slave, Lupita blew us away and the other stars out of the water in a beautiful powder blue Prada gown. The pretty, floaty dress was an unexpected yet welcome departure from the bold, structured gowns she's been adorned and adored in all awards season.
Lupita's co-stars and director all kept it classic and classy at the lucrative awards. Steve McQueen, Benedict Cumberbatch, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Michael Fassbender all opted for old-fashioned black tuxes.
Taking a baby-step away from the classic tux, Joseph Gordon-Levitt looked cool and quirky in a lightly patterned black suit, and Chris Hemsworth's warm burgundy jacket looked super-suave. Taking a slightly bigger step away, U2's Edge and Adam Clayton shone (literally) in sequinned and metallic lapels. At the other end of the male fashion spectrum, Pharrell Williams swapped that hat for shorts. No comment on that one.
But the real male standouts were the Oscar's Best Actors, who both chose white jackets. 'Best Supporting Actor' winner Jared Leto and his Dallas Buyers Club co-star, 'Best Actor' winner Matthew McConaughey mixed it up in Saint Laurent and Dolce & Gabanna respectfully to become possibly the best dressed actors of the night. The former's red dickie bow and the latter's white-on-black-on-white ensemble looked cool and clean and helped both actors stand out on the red carpet. Special mention to Jared Leto's shining ombre hair, envied by many hair conscious ladies. The 30 Seconds to Mars frontman has oft been famed for his hair, never more than during this awards season. Dallas Buyers Club also won best makeup and hairstyling last night. Fitting.

Back to the ladies, and the running theme of the gowns was mermaid skirted. Even 'Best Supporting Actress' nominee and Dior darling Jennifer Lawrence chose a fitted dress over her usual princess-y ball gown. The American Hustle star stunned in a scarlet peplum dress. Her co-star and fellow nominee (for 'Best Actress') Amy Adams looked flawless in a navy Gucci dress not dissimilar to Jennifer's Dior.
There was an abundance of nude on the Oscars red carpet this year, as with the other awards ceremonies of the season. The best nude gown of the night belonged to 'Best Actress' winner (for Blue Jasmine) Cate Blanchett. Her Armani gown stunned enough to render the rest of the colourless dresses irrelevant (Sorry, Kate Hudson). Cate's gown was understated in spite of being heavily embellished. Truly the perfect dress for Ms. Blanchett.
Our highlights of the night were somewhat ironically the darkest dresses. Olivia Wilde, Anna Kendrick and Charlize Theron all wowed in black. 7 months pregnant Olivia streamlined her figure in a sleek, high neck Valentino gown. Anna's sexy J. Mendel dress stood out, with asymmetrical sheer panelling and a slit high up the leg. But it was Charlize who stunned us the most. Her gorgeous Dior gown was layered - the sheer-striped top layer splaying out in fishtail style over the bottom which hugged the legs all the way to the end. The top of the dress was a unique almost-heart shaped strapless cut - plunging neckline juxtaposed with high shoulders.
