Cork native Angela Beaumont graduated in June of this year, with a BA Honours Degree in Fashion Design for Industry, from the renowned Heriot-Watt University in Scotland. Prior to this, Angela studied for a two-year Fashion Design Course in the Cork College of Commerce. She has completed a variety of internships. The most notable was in 2010, working in Edinburgh for four months with the established menswear brand ‘WalkerSlater’. During her internship Angela collaborated with the co–owner on the design of the label’s fi rst womenswear collection. Anglea also interned with Samantha Cole London in 2011, leading up to the presentation of her second collection at Vaxhaull Fashion Scout at London Fashion Week.
Though Angela dabbled in other creative fields like acting, a brief retail career reminded her of her love of individual style, and the art of figuring out what suits people, and how to dress them for their shape and style. While passionate about this personal and practical approach to design, her ideas are always wonderfully, wildly creative and intellectual. Her graduate collection was inspired by scientist Brian Cox’s BBC series Wonders of the Solar System, while other collections were based on the Brixton riots, the surrealist art movement and fi lms like Into The Wild.
The multi-talented lass is currently curating an inter-disciplinary exhibition in The Roundy Bar, Cork with abstract painter Siobhan Grace, whose paintings inspired Angela. Two photographers are also displaying their work in relation to both the fashion and paintings. As well as her creative collaborations, Angela is known for her distinctive blending of opposite materials, such as mohair and leather or silk and wool, making her pieces very distinctive.
We’re going to be seeing a lot more from Angela, as recently her work was selected from a range of Irish established and new designers, for the ‘RIAN’ Irish showcase exhibition. This exhibition will tour to the Irish Embassy in Berlin next year during London Fashion Week in February. She’s also recently designed for musicians like Julie Feeney, so keep an eye on concerts stages for more of her creations!
Angela also recently set up her business and label and has a studio on Anglesea Street Cork. She is currently working on an Autumn/Winter Collection 2014/15 for pre-selections for ‘Create at Brown Thomas’. She is also available for commissions by appointment.
