Forget Karen O or Kate Moss, Fight Like Apes singer Maykay‘s rock ‘n’ roll style icon is none other than Igor Honey. Come again?
Finding a style that’s a little bit rock 'n' roll – but more importantly individual and comfortable – is crucial for the lead-singer of promising new Irish band Fight Like Apes.
Maykay has no agenda when it comes to choosing an outfit for her gigs – or just for getting up in the morning, although she has developed a couple of guidelines.
“What sums up my style is too much black, too much time on my hands, too much make-up, and too much back-combing of my hair,” she laughs. “I’d love to go for that natural look, but there’s just something about going on stage and being able to put on this whole persona…it’s managed to creep into my daily life too.”
Gigging has given the songstress the perfect outlet to develop her look to the extreme – and perform to the extreme also.
“It’s great to be able to go on stage and put on this image – it seems to suit the music,” Maykay reflects. “Every time we play I get to have a 40-minute tantrum, the crowd seem to go for that and I love it. I’m lucky – other people get in trouble for going nuts, and get arrested, and I get to rid myself of any anger I have.”
In terms of style icons, the Fight Like Apes vocalist has an unlikely role model.
“This is a weird one, my icon is Igor Honey from The Hoovers And Sledgehammers. I’d love to go with something more modern but I can’t. I take care of how I look but I don’t go for names or anything like that. I find his style refreshing and invigorating.”
Fight Like Apes’ new EP, How Am I Supposed To Kill You If You Have All The Guns, is released on Fifa Records, May 18.
