Feel more connected to Europe than ever, with a visitto Dublin's newly opened Europa Experience...
Standing up for our democracy, and our rights, is as important now as ever. But for many of us, how European democracy works on a day-to-day basis, and how it impacts our lives, remains a bit of a mystery. Now, however, exploring the inner-workings of the European Parliament, Commission and Council has never been easier, or closer to home – with the opening of the brand new Europa Experience in Dublin.
Located in cities across the continent – including Berlin, Paris, Copenhagen, Helsinki and more – Europa Experiences are unique, multimedia spaces offering visitors fascinating insights into European politics and history. Whether you’re passionate about policy, or interested in making a difference in your own community, these free visitor experiences are engaging and immersive days out for anyone with an interest in the world around them.
Dublin’s Europa Experience is the 14th of its kind across Europe – with four more Europa Experiences set to open before the end of 2025. The attraction opened to the public in October, in the newly-built Europe House on Chatham Street, just off Grafton Street – only a quick stroll away from other popular visitor attractions like the National Gallery and the Book of Kells at Trinity College Dublin.
The space is home to the European Parliament Liaison Office (EPLO) and will soon also be home to the European Commision Representation in Ireland. The role of the EPLO is to help Irish citizens engage with the European Parliament – providing important information about current issues and legislation, and giving updates about what Irish MEPs are currently working on. The Europa Experience is yet another way that they’re helping people feel included in, and informed about, what’s happening in the European Parliament.
That’s not to say that learning about the European Union will feel like homework! In fact, when you step inside the Europa Experience in Dublin, you can look forward to a thrilling selection of interactive and educational exhibitions, featuring cutting-edge multimedia tools, as well as an immersive 360° cinema. Through engaging storytelling, you’ll gain fascinating insights how EU politics change people’s lives every day.
We all want to be a force for positive change in our communities, and feel like our voice is represented. Through these interactive displays, you’ll realise that there’s nothing lofty or out-of-reach about such goals, and making your mark on the world really is possible. You’ll also come to realise how much we, as Europeans, have accomplished together – and the crucial challenges we now face.
Of course, learning about Europe isn’t just for the adults. Visitors of all ages will find something to gravitate towards, whether it’s in-depth learning, or fun videos, quizzes, colouring books and games. You never know – a trip to the Europa Experience could even inspire little ones to dream big, and start envisioning ways they could make a real difference in the world one day…
And if it’s a parliamentary career you’re chasing – or you’re simply curious about the everyday activities of those who work in the European Union – you’ll also get the chance to step into the shoes of an MEP, and learn exactly how EU laws are made.
Or maybe you’re in the mood for a fun selfie? Pop into the Europa Experience’s photo booth, and send your snap as an inspiring e-greeting card.
While there’s plenty to captivate Irish visitors, tourists from further afield will be able to explore the Europa Experience too, with information available in all 24 of the EU’s official languages.
Inclusivity is embraced across the board. The building is equipped to be accessible for those with limited mobility – while subtitled videos, and media stations set up for portable induction loops, ensure that the Experience is as inclusive as possible. Friendly staff will also be on site for those who need additional assistance.
‘Europe In The Heart Of Ireland’ – the inaugural exhibition of the Europa Gallery – opened alongside the Experience in October, featuring works by 100 artists across Ireland. Running there until November 22, before moving on to the Hamilton Gallery in Sligo, the exhibition serves as a powerful celebration of this island’s rich culture, and its important place within the EU.
The Europa Experience is an utterly unique – and free! – day out in Dublin, which students, families, locals and tourists alike will enjoy. But it’s also so much more than that. By delving headfirst into the wonderful world of European politics, you’ll find yourself engaging with the various cultures around you in exciting new ways. This is particularly important now, as – in the face of extremism and geopolitical tensions around the world – we’re all reminded of the need to actively protect our democracy and our rights. The best way to do that is to be informed – and the best place to get informed is right here in Dublin, at the Europa Experience.
Dublin’s Europa Experience is open to the public seven days a week, and entry is free of charge. Group visits, and school trips, are also welcomed.
